Answer

Dear Sir,

Lately there have been an increasing number of child abuse cases reported in the newspapers. Last month, Malaysians were shocked by the death of a nine-year-old child abuse victim. On 6th June 2017, another child abuse video recording went viral via social media. In this incident, a woman forced a child to stop eating before hitting the girl with what appears to be a wooden back -scratcher. Scolding the child in Tamil while continuing with the beatings, the woman had accused the girl of spilling food from her plate, the Sun reported.

It was really sad to see the child over TV with all the bruise marks. I can’t believe that parents would be so cruel to their children.

Child abuse is a serious problem and action must be taken to help the poor children. We can only fight child abuse if there is active cooperation from everyone. Firstly, everyone with information on child abuse must report the matter to the police or the Social Welfare Department. Some people might think that we should not interfere in other people’s affairs. That is the wrong attitude. We have to care for these helpless children. The courts on their part should take a serious view of child abuse. This means that those who are found guilty must be punished severely.

Recently, a Member of the Parliament suggested that those who abuse children should be caned publicly. I support this move. Although some might argue that public caning is not suitable, my view is that cruel acts of child abuse can only be stopped by such harsh punishment.

Parents should also be educated on the rights of children. The rights of children in fact, cover everything from the right to be loved and protected to the right to a good education.

Last but not least, the authorities must make sure that when a child is left in the care of others, these ‘adopted’ parents or nannies are able to provide the love and care the child needs.

Child abuse is inhuman. The Malaysian public must do all they can to put a stop to it.
